The purpose of this conference is to consider the work of Marshall McLuhan vis-à-vis religious thought. Marshall McLuhan was a devoted Roman Catholic who embraced and studied diverse cultures and religions in formulating his theory of social media. In this conference we plan to revisit some well-known aspects of his work, viewing them in the context of the relationship between faith and culture, and to call attention to less familiar aspects of his thought that are directly focused on these themes.

All media of communications are clichés serving to enlarge man’s scope of action, his patterns of association and awareness. These media create environments that numb our powers of attention by sheer pervasiveness.
